At this stage, over 1 million patients are believed to have been treated worldwide. The Melbourne Excimer Laser Group has performed over 10,000 operations since November 1991. Studies to date show that the procedure is safe, effective and predictable.

Your own particular prescription should be discussed with your surgeon, who will be able to give you an indication of your predicted visual outcome following excimer laser.

As a guide, the results for the Melbourne Excimer Laser Group show that for patients with less than 6 dioptres of myopia on the cornea, 98% can see 6/12 or better without glasses following treatment. 6/12 is a measurement of vision from an eye chart and is the standard level required to legally drive.

Clinical results, which have compared PRK and LASIK for patients with a low prescription, show virtually no difference in outcomes.

LASIK treatment for patients with a higher prescription appears to be better than PRK.
